VINCENT WATCHES PORKY PIG'S FEAT (by Vincent Mollica)
A collection of comics by recurring "Cashiers" contributor Vincent Mollica, loosely organized around the experience of watching the great Frank Tashlin Looney Tunes short "Porky Pig's Feat". This takes a few forms: the backbone is arguably a series of diary entries about quotidian happenings in Vincent's daily life that each lead into attempts to summarize "Porky Pig" in comics form upon watching and rewatching repeatedly. Eventually this moves into increasingly abstract extrapolations on the characters, individual frames, and iconography from the short. I hadn't seen "Porky Pig" before reading this comic, but can attest to how alluring and rewatchable it is... it's really a mysterious cartoon, and Vincent's freeform approach to channeling its spirit into a comic is entertaining and inspiring. Vincent is adept at using tiny panels on a large page ("Quimby the Mouse"-style) to create a cumulative emotional effect ... if you're looking for work by someone who understands how to make a comics page sing you definitely need to read this and his "Movie Theater Stories".
