MOVIE THEATER STORIES #1 (by Vincent Mollica)
This is a collection by frequent "Cashiers" contributor Vincent Mollica, which essentially serves as his Eightball/Dirty Plotte/Yummy Fur-esque "one-man anthology". In each of the roughly half-dozen stories printed here, Vincent finds novel ways for text and image to relate to each other via page design, whether it's using outlines of his hands to break up/organize thoughts in his diary entries, or the deceptive simplicity of "X Stories", composed of notebook pages divided by large X's drawn across them, with illustrations in the left and right-hand panels creeping into and out of the center point while the narration flows down from the top quadrant to the bottom, hourglass style. Equally as impressive is Vincent's writing, which draws from quotidian events and dialogue with an extremely moving specificity and emotional realism. This is one of the most imaginative comic collections I've read in a long time and Vincent is one of my favorite contemporary cartoonists.
