random issue of WAX DARTS
from January 2021 to March 2023 I published 6 issues of a split-zine called Wax Darts. It was governed by three edicts: 1) each issue would feature original comic work by myself and one other artist; 2) regardless of page orientation it must be 8.5x4" (roughly the size of a regular envelope); 3) it would cost $0.00. It started basically because in 2020 people kept telling me we had to support the post office so I wanted an excuse as a "good liberal artiste" to mail things. It also coincided with a strong belief I had at the time that contemporary comics could only be powerful if they embraced their inherent disposability. In fact, several issues could only "properly" be read if you tore pages out from the binding and rearranged them in some form or another.
I don't think I made much of a dent in rescuing the postal service, or inspiring belief in whatever self-destructive junk art theology I was trying to proselytize. But in trying to spread the zine to as many people as possible -- either through the mail or by constantly carrying around as many copies as I could fit in my pockets and handing them off to someone just for saying hello to me -- I did meet some interesting artists and make some steadfast friends. I haven't done one in over a year but I haven't officially retired the series either, so if you like the concept and wanna try and make a #7 happen let me know.
